Veterans Commissioner Danny Kinahan has claimed that retired soldiers have "begrudgingly" accepted legislation that will see immunity from prosecution for Troubles-era crimes “In effect an Amnesty” for Terrorists .
DANNY KINAHAN YOU SIR DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE MAJORITY OF VETERANS INCLUDING THOSE WITHIN NORTHERN IRELAND NOR DO YOU SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WE REPRESENT
Mr Kinahan told the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee that there is a "huge discomfort" among veterans about the legislation, but that they see it as a chance to help families and "close it all down".
The Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill will see immunity from prosecution for Troubles-era crimes be offered to those who are deemed to have co-operated with an information retrieval body including past Terrorist crimes carried out in the 30+ year conflict .
It will also close down future inquests and investigations, with a new Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) put in place.
Those deemed to have co-operated with the commission will be offered immunity from prosecution. Those currently living abroad due to being sought for Terrorism within the United Kingdom “on the runs” will be able to return home providing they co-operate with (ICRIR). As part of this current prisoners that opt to co-operate can apply for early release from prison under licence & will be awarded freedom if deemed to have satisfied the (ICRIR).
It has been widely condemned by all political parties in Northern Ireland who see this bill as serving both the Terrorist & the UK Governments agenda , as well as victims' campaigners including Veterans Campaigners , the Irish Government and Amnesty International.
Mr Kinahan claimed the Bill will provide for a "fairer and more balanced, level playing field".
To place Those that served Queen & Country to thwart the Terrorist on the same level as the Terrorist they faced is Shameful & those that advocated for this should hang there heads in shame
In reality the first ever Veterans Commissionaire to Northern Ireland was simply a stepping stone for Government using this Softly Softly Approach to attempt to dupe Veterans Into believing that Brandon ‘s Sham Veterans Bill is the best way forward
Try telling that to Op Banner Veterans not in the green lighted click with Government Officials.
Try telling that to many Victims of Republican Terrorism both in Northern Ireland & on the Mainland.
Try telling that to Families of Service Personnel Killed & Maimed by Terrorists including the 3 Scottish Soldiers , Hyde Park Bombing , Warrington Bomb , M62 coach Bombing , SEFF “ South East Fermanagh Foundation “ to name a few .
